Black River
Property Map
Black River is the third largest district of Mauritius in terms of area, but the smallest in terms of population.
Here you will find Mauritius’s biggest national park. It is a wild and untamed expanse of lush thick forest and green-rolling hills spread over 68 square kilometers. It is a stunningly spectacular corner of the island and is an absolute must if you are vacationing here.
It became a protected reserve in 1994 and is home to an abundance of indigenous plant and animal life found nowhere else on earth but in Mauritius. To see the plant life beautifully flowering the best time to visit is between September and February.
There are a lot of different trails that crisscross the park so you are advised to remember to bring a map of the area with you when you’re here. All of the effort of hiking in the reserve will be worth it as the views you will encounter during this hike are nothing short of breathtaking.
Located on the south west of the island it is also a place to view the stunning sunsets over the Indian Ocean.
