Port Louis
Property Map
Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius. It was founded by the French governor and colonist Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais in 1735. It is named after the French King Louis the XV
Naturally as the capital it is the busiest city on the island. It is a heaving, hectic, busy and bustling part of the island. It feels like a kaleidoscope of countries and cultures, with flashes of India, Africa, Europe, China and the Middle East all rolled into one. Street vendors and market places are abundant here and the century’s old cobbled streets and buildings add to the character and of the city.
Port Louis is surrounded by the Moka mountain range. Because of the geography it is also one of the hottest parts of the island. Traffic can be extremely busy and very heavy at times. It can be quite difficult to drive around with its numerous one-way streets so be warned in advance if you drive here.
If you want to see a stunning view of the city then head to the Citadel (Fort Adelaide). Situated on a hill overlooking the city and the harbour this fort was built by the British in 1835. Here you can get an uninterrupted panoramic view of the whole of Port Louis with the Moka mountain range to the east of the city, and the Indian Ocean and the port to the West.
